Gary
Gary wrote and directed the Australian musical Sideshow Alley with composer Paul Keelan, winning the inaugural Pratt Prize for Music Theatre and the 2007 Helpmann Award for Best Original Score. Shows directed include Mamma Mia, Georgy Girl, Hello Dolly, Ned, The Mousetrap, Cry Me a River, Singin’ in the Rain, Carousel, Funny Girl, Call Me Madam, Mame, City of Angels, 42nd Street, Fully Committed, Guys and Dolls, Menopause the Musical, Crusade, A Little Night Music and The Boy Friend. He was Associate Director for the Australian productions of Les Misérables, Miss Saigon and Mamma Mia. Original written work includes Tilly, Jekyll, and The Man Inside. Current works with Paul Keelan include Ship of Fools, A Woman’s Eyes, Black Widow, the Helpmann nominated Wombat Stew, Tea With Oscar, nominated for the Green Room Award for Best Original Music and Lyrics, Artemisia, Bim Bom and their latest work, Monster, a Gothic comedy. Gary is also the author and illustrator of the More Than Two Books. Awards include The Mo Award, Helpmann Award 2007, The Aussie Theatre Award for Best Direction of a Musical, and he recently won the 2017 Green Room Award for Music Theatre Direction for Hello Dolly starring Marina Prior.
Paul
Paul graduated from the Elder Conservatorium of Music with a degree in piano, clarinet and music education. Paul composed the score to Sideshow Alley which won the inaugural Pratt Prize for Music Theatre in 2002. Sideshow Alley was produced at QPAC in 2007 after receiving a workshop production directed by Gale Edwards in 2003. It won a Helpmann Award for Best Original Score. He has performed widely in musicals, cabaret and concerts and as a soloist and is an experienced music educator, musical director, vocal coach and accompanist. Paul was Music Director for Menopause the Musical, in both Australia and New Zealand and Cast Recording. He composed the childrens musical Wombat Stew which has twice toured Australia. Paul spent three years touring with the a cappella group, The Phones, performing in major concert halls and comedy venues throughout Australia and recorded their debut album, Voices. He was resident singer/pianist at The Regent Hotel in Melbourne for 15 years.
Paul and Gary have been working as collaborators for the past eighteen years. Their musical SIDESHOW ALLEY won the inaugural Pratt Prize for Music Theatre in 2002 and won the Helpmann Award for Best Original Score. SIDESHOW ALLEY premiered at The Playhouse, QPAC in 2007. The cast included Silvie Paladino (Helpmann nominated for Best Actress in a musical) Robyn Arthur (Helpmann nominated for Best Supporting Actress in a musical) Alex Rathgeber, Christopher Parker and Mike Bishop. Gary won the Aussietheatre.com Award for Best Direction of a musical and Paul won for Best Musical Direction. Their body of work includes TEA WITH OSCAR, nominated for The Green Room Award for music and lyrics. It premiered in 2001 with a return season in 2003. Cast included Grant Smith, Jackie Rees and Toby Truscott. Their Helpmann nominated children’s musical WOMBAT STEW toured Australia in 2010 to sell out crowds with a second national tour in 2014. SHIP OF FOOLS was chosen as the performance piece for the VCA graduates after a workshop and showing at Chapel Off Chapel. Cast included Marina Prior, Adam Murphy, Silvie Paladino, John O’May, Jackie Rees, Geraldine Morrow and Melissa Langton Their current projects include BLACK WIDOW (Or How To Murder Your Husband!), A WOMAN’S EYES, JASON AND THE DRAGON, ARTEMISIA, a musical based on the life of the 17th Century Baroque painter, Artemisia Gentileschi, BIM BOM a story of survival set against the backdrop of the Russian Revolution and MONSTER a Gothic comedy set in the afterlife.
